Back Next

Release 2026.01a

Initial installation for the year must be from the first California Supplement (540) program we provide you for the current tax season. Once you have completed the installation, you can use these on-line updates for subsequent changes throughout the tax season.

TIP: Before executing these downloads, exit Tax Preparer by closing the Tax Preparer Control Panel. If you do not, you will encounter an error message indicating that HSPrnTax.EXE is being used by another process, and the update will not be completed.

The downloads on this page are only for California Supplement for Form 540 returns. Downloads for Tax Preparer for Form 1040 returns are found on the Main Downloads page. Downloads for the Partnership Edition for Form 1065 returns are found on the Partnership Downloads page.

Changes in recent releases

(updated 4/12/2026)

Release 2026.01a differs from Release 2026.01 as follows:

  •   Schedule D added for figuring the California Capital Gain or Loss Adjustment. CAUTION: Because the FTB has reformatted this schedule to their Absolute Positioning Format, the details for 22 transactions are spread over 4 pages, a stark contrast from the format 1-page format. We cannot currently spread our printout of worksheets over 4 pages on the FTB form. As a result, if there are more than 6 transactions to report, we print a statement crossreference at line 1a and print all transactions in a separate supporting statement that lists all transactions. However, if have more than 6 but no more than 22 transactions to report, and you would like the details for all those transactions to appear on the schedule that you file with the FTB, you can manually enter those details by computer on the FTB's own form, which is available from the Documents tab of our skinny Tax Preparer Control Panel if you use our Standard or Premium Level software. (Note that you are NOT required to include Schedule D with the return you file if no adjustments to your federal Schedule D are required.)
  •   Schedule P added for figuring the Alternative Minimum Tax and Credit Limitations. Note that a new credit has been added to Part III of Schedule P for the Program 4.0 Motion Picture and Television Production Credit, as described in the What's New section of the FTB instructions for Schedule P. It appears in the software on screen 8 of our form for Schedule P, pages 3 and 4.
  •   Form 5805 added, including Form 5805-F for farmers, for figuring the penalty for Underpayment of Estimated Tax. Note that Part III of Form 5805 (which is the schedule for the Annualized Income Installment Method) appears on the Forms Menu as a separate form labeled 5805-AI. Also note that Form 5805-F is integrated into our Form 5805 for data entry, but is printed separately as its own form for the FTB.
  •   Form 540-ES added, for figuring your 2026 Estimated Tax and printing the quarterly payment vouchers for the FTB.
  •   Worksheets E and 4835 revised to correct labels that incorrectly referred to tax year 2021 instead of tax year 2025.
